If you are thinking about starting a blog and are not sure whether it will be the right decision or not, then read on to find out if you should start a blog or not.
In simple terms, a blog is an online platform where you share your thoughts and knowledge about a particular topic. You can start a blog on any platform you deem fit. But you shouldn’t. Starting a blog is a serious matter, and you should know what you’re getting into before thinking about it.
If you’re starting a blog for fun, then you can do whatever you want at your pace. But if you’re serious about blogging and want to make money from it, then it requires planning, seriousness, market research, and time.
Think about these questions before you think about starting a blog. They will save you money down the road.
As I said above, starting a blog is a serious business, and you should only start a blog if you can dedicate time to it. If you’re working on your blog with a full-time job, then you need to plan and set aside some time so you can work regularly on it.
Yes, it is very possible to make money from blogging. There are various ways you can monetize your blog and start your side hustle. But it requires time. A blog is not a get-quick-rich scheme, not a get-rich-quick scheme that will start generating your money the moment you decide. It requires solid Business foundations and the right strategy for you to be able to get some cash out of it. It will not be instant gratification; the results will not be immediate or consistent, and you need to be comfortable with it.
Blogging is not always fun. It requires long hours and boring tasks that need to be done. If you’re just starting, it is not possible to hire someone to help you out as your blog hasn’t started generating any income for you yet. You will need to be the writer, designer, developer, and marketer. You will need to wear many hats, sometimes all at once. You will need to sit behind your laptop and get things done.
If you think you have enough knowledge that you don’t need anybody’s help or guidance, then you cannot start a blog. It’s a very learn-on-the-go process. You will understand a lot of things only when you try it. There are going to be times when you will have to watch multiple tutorials or read several articles to figure something out, only to find out in the end that it’s all very basic.
Starting a blog means you should be familiar with the website’s backend, design, social media, writing, editing, proofreading, and more. Yes, there are a lot of tools out there to make your work easier. But you will need knowledge to learn how to use them. If you get overwhelmed by the thought of using new technologies, then stay out.
You will need to make checklists, to-do lists, and many other lists because there will be too many things to do before you start the blog and after when you need to maintain it. It requires discipline, and you would need to force yourself to work on it and get done with it. Yes, it’s absolutely fine to take breaks and avoid burnout. But it shouldn’t be the reason to not do anything at all. If you don’t have a work ethic, it will be very difficult for you to get anything done.
A lot of people don’t like to show their faces and hide behind the camera. I get it. I have been—hell, I am one of those people. But at one point, you have to remove your mask and show your identity. People connect with people better and faster than they connect with a logo. It’s fine to be anonymous in the beginning when you’re in the process of setting everything up and working on your confidence to show up. But once that part is done, you have to show up, and let me tell you, the results will be amazing!
That being said, I will not advise anyone to not start a blog. It has changed my life and given me perspective. I now have a purpose to get through my day.
But I will also say it is a serious task, and if you want to make money from it, you have to be proactive and have a goal. Because you will only succeed when you’re consistent and have strong foundations.

Rightly said. Starting a blog is a serious business if you want to monetize from it. Don’t jump of you’re not ready to work for it.

So true! I’m definitely learning that it’s a lot of work. I have a full-time job too, but I try my best to manage my time! It’s challenging.

This couldn’t be more true. I started my blog about 6 months ago, and while I am loving it and have a marketing/tech background, it is a LOT of work and a lot of learning. Well done spelling it out for others who may still be considering it! – Lara from Positively Squared Away

I started my blog a few months ago and it’s a lot to deal with. I don’t think people realize how much goes into running a blog. AND if you work a full time job you’ve now taken on another full time job. This post can help people decide if blogging is really what they desire to do.

Yes! It is interesting to see the opposite side on things to consider about blogging. Blogging does take a lot of your time and sometimes it is hard to figure out on what to write. Thanks again for writing this!
