7 Strategy Mistakes You Are Making On Instagram And How To Fix Them

Updated: Apr 12

Instagram is THE place to be for your business. But are you making any strategy mistakes on Instagram?

Instagram now has over 3.5 billion active users on its platform, which means if your business does not have a presence on it, you are missing out on some real opportunities for your business.

People are using social media more than ever. People are now consuming more content because of the information outpouring. People are not just using Instagram for leisure; they are using it to stay updated with the latest industry insights, learn a new skill, build a personal brand, get freelance offers, and more.

In the process of using Instagram, you might be making these strategy mistakes, which is not good. Read on further to learn more.

Using vague username

Pick a username that is easy to read and understand, whether it's a brand name, your name, an alias, or your business name. Keep it simple and avoid using any or too many numbers or punctuation marks like a dot or an underscore. It should be easy to remember and search.

Unclear profile picture

Unless and until you are a big brand that is recognized by its logo, stop using it. Stop using group profile pictures and a long shot of your portrait.

Keep it a clear headshot of your face. If you can infuse your brand colours into your background, better!

Not optimising bio

Your bio is the first thing someone reads when they land on your profile. You don't have to be quirky or sarcastic here. Your bio's work is to convince people that what you do is genuine and get them to follow you. Try to keep it in pointers instead of sentences. Use emojis to break up your pointers so they're easy to read. Convert who you are and what you do.

Not using the appropriate link in bio

There is only one place on your Instagram profile where you can put your link: in your bio. Make the most of it. Use it to drive traffic to your other channels, like your blog, your Facebook group, and your product page. Your call to action should match the link. If you're telling them to explore the product page, don't direct them to your blog.

Having too many highlights

Yes, you read it right. Your highlights are a part of your bio and the most ignored part as well. You need to pay attention to it. Use 8-10 highlights at best. No one likes to scroll. Create customised covers for each highlight that match their content.

Not utilising Instagram features

Instagram wants people to stay on Instagram. That's why Instagram is so quick to bring so many changes and updates to its app. Instagram doesn't want its users to leave the channel. Try and use all of Instagram's features, like single feed posts, carousels, IGTV, Going Live, stories, and Reels. Especially Reels. Reels have the power to blow up your Instagram Profile. Create Reels because Instagram is pushing them more and more.

Not being consistent

Yes, it is being said time and time again, but I'll say it one more time: consistency is key. There is a reason why it is so overused: it works. You have to keep doing things to make it work. You don't learn something in a day, a week, or even a month. You don't earn $1000 at your first job. Consistency doesn't mean doing it every day. It means sticking to a schedule and following it. It can be anything you are comfortable with. You can always change it.

There it is. The 7 strategy mistakes you're making on Instagram and how to fix them

I hope this helps.
