7 Hacks To Declutter Your Online Life

Updated: 7 days ago

We all have too much going on in our lives. Be it work, friends, family, side hustles, or sometimes just life, I know some of you’ll like it messy and love it, but deep down, you also know that being organised will save you a lot of time and trouble. In this article, I am not going to talk about cleaning your room or doing your laundry. I will be sharing some hacks to declutter your online life. Yes, you heard it right—online life.

We spend a lot of our time in front of screens, so it only makes sense to monitor them sometimes. Let’s see what you can do to keep your online self organised.

Just a reminder. It will not happen in hours or days. It might take a few days or weeks to do the below-mentioned things, but I promise you will be in a more peaceful online world once you do.

P.S.: You won’t have to leave the comfort of your couch to do any of this.

Unsubscribe

We all want to make our lives more manageable with the help of technology. But what happens when the same thing starts sending you promotional emails twice a day? You get irritated and start to ignore it. And in that mess, sometimes you end up missing much more important stuff too. So what you need to do is UNSUBSCRIBE. Unsubscribe from all those emails that are not adding value to your life. Unsubscribe from anything that you don’t need at the moment. You always have time to subscribe again.

Keep It On The Drive

Google Drive. The saviour of our data What should I say about this that hasn’t already been said before? Yes, keep all of your files, PowerPoints, documents, or any other document you want. You can create folders to categorise everything and even colour-code them. This way, you will not have to depend on your PC every time.

P.S.: Do NOT share your password with ANYONE.

Delete Google Photos

I know this looks like whatever, but this is important. A lot of us rely on Google Photos to keep our selfies and pictures safe. But you might also know that it takes a backup of your already installed gallery on your phone and will reserve all the screenshots you took of your chats to show your best friend, the memes you saved to share at the right time, or the quotes you saved to use as a caption for the next selfie you take. Clean it, and you will clear up a lot of space on your cloud.

Clean Your Phone

Your phone has many cache files, which might be slowing it down. Make it a weekly practise to delete those files to keep your phone running smoothly. Delete those promotional messages you get rid of as spam. Also, delete your transaction messages. You will already have the statement in your app; you don’t need two notes as a reminder. Go to your WhatsApp folder and delete all the stickers and GIFs you’ve sent and all the memes you've sent that you don’t need. It will reduce the load on your WhatsApp BackUp.

P.S.: Be careful while doing this. Don’t end up erasing essential files from the device.

Delete your Apps

Did you notice the number of apps you have installed on your phone? Almost 100 app icons. Some of those are preinstalled, so you cannot do anything about them, and then there are some that you installed yourself. Now think about it: how many have you ever used for more than a month? How many do you use daily, weekly, or monthly? I am sure the answer will be no for some of the apps. You can also go to your phone’s settings to see which apps you use less of, and whatever you don’t need, don’t uninstall it! Log out or delete your account and your data, and then uninstall your app.

Unfriend/Unfollow/Unsubscribe

You might have 1,000 friends on your Facebook account or thousands of connections on your LinkedIn profile. But if those people are not lifting you or motivating you to do better, it’s time to hit the unfriend, unfollow, or remove the connection button right away. No one has time for that kind of negativity in their lives.

Use Google!

Have you ever checked out the plethora of services Google offers? Besides the basics, Google Keep provides so much more that your head will start to spin. It covers everything. Right from business, to learning, to organising, to EVERYTHING! One such service is Google Docs and Google Sheets. You can access it anytime you want. You can edit it on the go and save it as and when you want.

Besides these, a few others like going to the market, calling that friend, replying to that annoying email from a co-worker (nicely), cooking that Chinese, and whatever you want, get it done.

Some small tasks, like folding your laundry, organising your closet, and ironing your clothes for the week, can be done quickly. Put on some loud music that you can headbang to and get in the groove. By the time Taylor Swift is on her fifth song, you will be done with your chores. Nothing will happen in a day. Get into practice and keep doing the same thing every day.
